Tracy ranks seven popular AI side hustles by how quickly a busy nine-to-five worker can earn a first paid dollar, using a five-factor rubric: startup cost, skill barrier, weekly hours needed, time to first credible sale, and risk. It argues most videos hype income ceilings instead of the real metric—how long until a stranger pays you—and shares three signs that “make money online” content is selling a dream. The rankings place AI micro-SaaS last due to maximum skill barrier and longest time to first sale, with YouTube automation also slow because monetization is gated by subscriber and watch-hour thresholds. Mid-pack are AI consulting and AI art/print-on-demand (distribution bottleneck). Faster options are done-for-you local social media services and AI-assisted freelance gigs, while AI content clipping (Whoop/Viro) is #1 because it leverages existing audiences and payout systems. The host advises choosing one hustle, setting a 30–60 day proof-of-concept deadline, and not switching in week two.

[00:00:00] Tracy Brinkmann: Last month, I watched a stack of AI side hustle videos back to back doing my [00:00:05] research. ChatGPT side hustles, Claude side hustles, all of it. Every one of them seemed to [00:00:10] promise five figures in your first month, but not a single one of them told you how long it actually [00:00:15] takes to get to your first dollar.
[00:00:17] And I think that number matters, not the ceiling that some guy is [00:00:20] flashing in his thumbnail, the floor. How many hours? How much money? How many days of your [00:00:25] life before a stranger will actually pay you? Huh? I took seven of these side hustles, the [00:00:30] ones built on tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Midjourney that are all over YouTube [00:00:35] right now, and I ranked them the way you would rank gear before going out on deployment.
[00:00:39] Not by how good [00:00:40] it sounds on camera, but by how fast it actually performs when a busy person like you with a day [00:00:45] job tries to run it. I'm handing you that ranking straight with no money hype. [00:00:50] What might surprise you is the one everyone's chasing right now landed near the bottom, [00:00:55] and the one that no one's talking about took the top spot.
[00:00:58] Dark Horse [00:01:00] Entrepreneur Podcast
[00:01:02] Tracy Brinkmann: What is up? What is up? What is up, my fellow dark horse [00:01:05] entrepreneurs? Let's get stuck right in, shall we? Here are the three things you're gonna learn today if you stick around. One, the [00:01:10] five-factor rubric that I use on every hustle, and you can use it to run on any [00:01:15] idea that you have after you listen to this, not just the seven that I'm covering here.
[00:01:18] Number two, which hustle [00:01:20] realistically gets an everyday nine-to-five worker to their first paid dollar the [00:01:25] fastest, and which one looks simple on YouTube, but might actually take the longest to [00:01:30] earn a real dollar? And number three, the three tells that show you when a [00:01:35] make money online video or podcast is selling you a dream instead of a real business model.[00:01:40]
[00:01:40] R- r- you ready? You ready? Okay, let's rank them. First, let's talk about the rubric here. Uh, [00:01:45] the five factors that I used, and each of them were scored by low barrier, fast, [00:01:50] high barrier, slow. Okay? So we're talking about startup cost, a skill barrier, [00:01:55] weekly hours needed, time to first credible sale, and risk This is not about [00:02:00] income hype here.
[00:02:01] This is about how long it takes a stranger to hand you money. That, I think, is [00:02:05] the only real proof that counts when we're talking about timing here, okay? So I scored [00:02:10] each one of these a, a scale from one to five, one being the lowest, means it's the fastest and [00:02:15] so... And the lowest friction, so it's less hard, okay?
[00:02:18] And then number five, obviously the higher number, [00:02:20] the, the higher time it- it's gonna, gonna take you, or how hard it's gonna be, or how much risk [00:02:25] there is involved, okay? So lower numbers are better. Okay, so let's get to the [00:02:30] seven business models we're talking about here. And coming in at number seven is micro-SaaS, [00:02:35] an AI micro-SaaS.
[00:02:36] We're talking about the zero employee AI business, and this [00:02:40] one, my friends, is the slowest to the first dollar. Now, I scored this at 22 out of [00:02:45] 25. Remember, lower is better. Cost came in at four, skill came in at five, [00:02:50] hours came in at four, and time to first sale, five, with risk being four. [00:02:55] Here's the standout problem with this amazing model.
[00:02:57] Skill barrier and time to [00:03:00] sale are both maxed out. You're building a software and you're convincing a complete [00:03:05] stranger to trust an unproven tool before your first dollar will ever show up. [00:03:10] Um, I, I've watched folks like Dan Mattel. He had a video called These Five AI Businesses [00:03:15] Will Make You a Million Dollars With Zero Employees, and he talked about micro-SaaS businesses.
[00:03:18] And they... It's [00:03:20] amazing. This is what the creator reported and it, it's an amazing opportunity. This is what I think just about [00:03:25] everyone out there on YouTube is chasing right now because the upside sounds enormous. And to be [00:03:30] fair, that ceiling, that potential is real. That's my opinion. Heck, uh, episode [00:03:35] 558, just a few episodes ago, of this very podcast focused on the local version of [00:03:40] SaaS.
[00:03:40] But let's look at the floor. We see the ceiling. You're not just learning a skill, you're building [00:03:45] a software. You're finding a paying customer who's going to trust an unproven tool, [00:03:50] and you're usually gonna be competing with other tools that are already in the market. The indie [00:03:55] hacker and solo produ- communities that are out there make this look seamless.
[00:03:59] Well, a lot of the videos [00:04:00] out there make this look super easy. Yes, you will see people building zero employee AI [00:04:05] businesses and being able to do it in about a weekend But let's be honest, this is not a weekend project [00:04:10] the first time. This one gets the highest skill barrier on the list of the seven we're talking [00:04:15] about.
[00:04:15] It also gets the highest risk, and it gets the highest runway to the first [00:04:20] stranger paying you money. Don't get me wrong, I still think this is a strong hustle, but [00:04:25] I think it's a strong second or third hustle once you have a proof of concept from [00:04:30] something you can do easier and faster. But it is going to be a very rough first hustle.[00:04:35]
[00:04:35] Okay, that moves us to number six on our list, AI content and YouTube [00:04:40] automation. I scored this one 17 out of 25. Cost, two. Skill was four. [00:04:45] Hours was four. Time to sale was four, and risk is three. The standout [00:04:50] problem here I find, the time to sale is still very high. It's not five, but it's still [00:04:55] pretty high.
[00:04:55] Uh, and, and I mean this in, in most cases. Why, you may ask? Well, let me tell you. Because [00:05:00] YouTube gates monetization behind a subscriber and a watch hour [00:05:05] threshold, which by the way is, you know, that watch hour threshold is going up in, what is it, February of 2027. [00:05:10] It's doubling. So there's zero dollars available to you until you clear that hurdle, [00:05:15] no matter how good your content is.
[00:05:16] Folks like Charlie Chang in his video, 5 Genius Ways to Make Money from [00:05:20] Home Using AI, and I think he also did one called the 8 Best Side Hustles to Make a Lot of Money. [00:05:25] Look, it, it's, it's low cash cost, but the real cost is time, and of [00:05:30] course building an audience that you don't have yet. Look, YouTube is not gonna pay [00:05:35] you for effort.
[00:05:36] Nope. It's gonna pay you once you clear a subscriber and a [00:05:40] watch hour threshold. Currently 4,000 watch hours. In February of 2027, I believe it's [00:05:45] going up to 8,000, unless something changes between now and then. And that's weeks and even potentially [00:05:50] months, even if you post consistently, of how long it could take.
[00:05:53] If you do this, it can be [00:05:55] a very, very good adventure, and also a very good long-term asset. But [00:06:00] It's a bit of a bad choice if you need revenue proof this month. Okay? That brings us [00:06:05] to number five, AI-powered consulting. You know, reselling of established [00:06:10] information that from the career crowd, let's say.
[00:06:12] You already have some authority. You want to use [00:06:15] AI to enhance that authority. I'm gonna score this one at fourteen to twenty-five. Cost is two, [00:06:20] skill is three, hours is three, time to sale drops down to three, and risk is three. None of the [00:06:25] scores really spike here. It's really pretty mu- balanced overall.
[00:06:28] It's gonna take a moderate [00:06:30] amount of hustle effort across the board, which is honest, but it's not exciting. I, I saw [00:06:35] Wendy Nolan's video called The Easiest Digital Side Hustle to Start After 50. This [00:06:40] one's interesting to me because it leans into something that a lot of the side hustle content out there [00:06:45] completely ignores, which is your existing credibility.
[00:06:48] And what I mean by this is if you [00:06:50] have twenty years in a given field and you use AI to package what you know, whether that's [00:06:55] ChatGPT helping you write a course outline or Claude drafting, uh, your client deliverables, you can [00:07:00] move faster than starting from zero. But it still requires you to position an offer, [00:07:05] requires you to find your first client, which, let's be honest, is a sales skill, not really a tool [00:07:10] skill.
[00:07:10] So it's moderate speed and a moderate skill barrier, right? That brings us to [00:07:15] number four on the list, AI art and print on demand. I scored this one 13 out of [00:07:20] 25. Cost is two, skill is two, hours it's gonna take you is two, time to [00:07:25] sale four, and risk is three. The real standout problem here is the time to sale, as you could [00:07:30] hear.
[00:07:30] It jumps up to four. Everything else is a two except for risk, which is three. Production is [00:07:35] easy. Distribution is the real bottleneck. Why, you may ask? Well, it's because no one is out there [00:07:40] searching for a shop that you're gonna create and they haven't heard of yet. Mark On Business, uh, did a [00:07:45] video on this called I Tried Selling Art For 30 Days, and he shared realistic results.
[00:07:49] I like this [00:07:50] one to be on the list because the title is honest. It has realistic results, no [00:07:55] hype. It's a low startup cost, low skill barrier to produce art. I mean, let's be honest, the, uh, tools [00:08:00] like Midjourney handle all the heavy lifting. The catch is gonna be that distribution factor, like I [00:08:05] mentioned.
[00:08:05] Doesn't matter whether you start up on Etsy or Amazon Merch or even Redbubble, [00:08:10] nobody is searching for your shop by name from day one. So your first [00:08:15] dollar depends on the traffic that you currently do not control. Realistic, just not [00:08:20] fast. I mean, unless you wanna dump a bunch of cash into ad spend, but that's not a topic we're tackling here, [00:08:25] because we all know if you pour some cash into ad spend, you can get attention, but [00:08:30] that's not what we're using as a rating factor, okay?
[00:08:31] Let's get back to it. That brings us to number three, done for [00:08:35] you AI social media and local business services. I scored this one 12 out of [00:08:40] 25. Cost two, skill two, hours three, time to sale two, and [00:08:45] risk three. Your standout factor working in your favor here is that the time to [00:08:50] sale drops from three to two.
[00:08:52] Why? Because you're selling to a business who [00:08:55] has money, and you're pitching that business an obvious pain point, versus you're [00:09:00] selling to someone who's a tightwad and you're pitching to a complete random stranger. [00:09:05] Susan Romanoff, uh, talks about this in the Five Ways To Make Money With AI When You're Lazy video.
[00:09:09] [00:09:10] Travis Nicholson talked about this in his video, The Lazy Way I Make Money With AI. [00:09:15] This, to me, jumps ahead of art and reselling for one reason: you're selling to a [00:09:20] business that already has money. Often, they're already spending money on marketing and other services, [00:09:25] and you're also pitching an obvious pain point.
[00:09:27] So again, you're not addressing some cold Internet [00:09:30] stranger out there. A local business owner who's overwhelmed by content will pay [00:09:35] for, "I handle your posts with AI," faster than a stranger will ever discover your [00:09:40] Etsy shop. The gig economy infrastructure really, it already exists out there for this kind of [00:09:45] service, which lowers the friction of getting paid.
[00:09:48] I think the real [00:09:50] skill that you're gonna have to develop in this one is outreach, because that becomes your force [00:09:55] multiplier, not how well you can use the AI tool. Okay? So that moves us to number two on the [00:10:00] list, AI-assisted freelance and, and prompt-based gigs. I score this one ten out of [00:10:05] twenty-five.
[00:10:05] Cost is one, skill is two, hours is three, time to sale [00:10:10] drops to two, and risk drops to two. Nearly every factor is low except [00:10:15] for your hours, and I did that because, let's be honest, those proposals and all that back and forth [00:10:20] you're gonna have to do with your clients is, is gonna suck up some time. It's gonna add up.
[00:10:23] Competition here [00:10:25] becomes the real risk, not the tool. Patrick Dang talked about this in his video, [00:10:30] "10 Claude AI Side Hustles That Can Pay a Full-Time Income." Sean Dalwit, [00:10:35] uh, also talked about this in his video, "The Simplest Way to Make Money Online with Claude AI." [00:10:40] I think this wins the runner-up spot for me because it plugs into platforms that [00:10:45] already have buyers that are looking for services.
[00:10:47] We're talking platforms like Upwork and [00:10:50] Fiverr, and of course, you can do direct outreach to small businesses that need AI-assisted [00:10:55] writing and research or admin work. It's low cost, and the skill barrier is [00:11:00] really: can you use the AI tool well and can you communicate well? Whether that's [00:11:05] ChatGPT for writing or Claude for research or, or some long-form work or using Midjourney [00:11:10] to create them some visual assets, most people can learn any of those tools in a weekend.[00:11:15]
[00:11:15] It's gonna be about that communication piece. What I think really keeps this from [00:11:20] becoming number one on this list is all the competition. Because let's be honest, we've heard them, and if you haven't, [00:11:25] you're about to. Everyone's pitching AI-assisted freelance gigs right now, so standing [00:11:30] out takes a much sharper offer than, "I know how to use ChatGPT."
[00:11:34] And you [00:11:35] certainly don't wanna jump into the pricing war, 'cause you'll just price yourself into obscurity. Okay? Now, [00:11:40] that brings us to number one on this list, and it really surprised me as I went through it. AI [00:11:45] content clipping. Yeah, also known as Whoop clipping. This is the fastest realistic time [00:11:50] to your first dollar.
[00:11:51] I scored this one 7 out of 25. This is the lowest [00:11:55] friction possible on this entire list. Cost is one, skill is two, hours is two, [00:12:00] time to sale drops to one, and your risk drops to one. Nothing here really [00:12:05] spikes, and time to sale on this one is the lowest of all the seven because you're [00:12:10] plugging into someone else's audience, and you're plugging into someone else's payment system.
[00:12:14] You don't have to build [00:12:15] your own. Dan Keefe talked about this one in his How to Actually Make Money With Whoop Clipping [00:12:20] video. It wins because it strips out the two things that slow [00:12:25] everyone down. You, you don't need to have an audience already, and you don't need to build one, and you don't need [00:12:30] to close your own sale.
[00:12:31] Nope. You're clipping and repurposing existing [00:12:35] long-form content from other creators or other brands who have already set up a paid [00:12:40] program to reward for these clippings, and payouts runs through existing platforms instead of you [00:12:45] having to go out there and chase invoices. There are platforms out there like Whoop and Viro, which is the [00:12:50] platform MrBeast's operation runs on.
[00:12:51] Both have active clipping campaigns where you get paid [00:12:55] per view or per clip accepted. The clips themselves will end up on TikTok and [00:13:00] Instagram Reels and r- YouTube Shorts, which means you're feeding three of the heaviest [00:13:05] traffic short-form platforms at once without needing a following on any of them.
[00:13:09] [00:13:10] Startup cost is close to zero. Skill barrier is really about learning the, the [00:13:15] video editing basics, like a CapCut or whatever tool you choose, and you can learn those from free [00:13:20] tutorials over a weekend. And because you're plugging into someone else's audience and someone else's [00:13:25] payment system and not building your own, the clock to your first payout is the [00:13:30] shortest possible of these seven models I've shared with you.
[00:13:33] Now, if you pick this one, [00:13:35] here's your first step today. Find one active clipping campaign on a platform like Whoop [00:13:40] or Viro and watch at least three winning clips that are in the same niche. I [00:13:45] would say watch more than that But at minimum, watch three of the high performing winning [00:13:50] clips. You wanna do this before you ever touch an editor.
[00:13:52] Then after you've done that and got a feel [00:13:55] for what makes it work and the vibe and the timing and everything, then take action. [00:14:00] Post your first clip within 48 hours because speed is gonna beat perfection's [00:14:05] butt here every single time Okay? Now, if none of these seven fit the [00:14:10] five or 10 hours that you actually have available inside your week, that's fine.
[00:14:13] Don't get me wrong. That's not [00:14:15] bad. That's data, not failure. Just look at what each one, and if it doesn't fit, cross it [00:14:20] off the list and move on to the next one. Because the real goal here isn't to find the best [00:14:25] hustle that's in the abstract. It's finding the one that survives that first punch to the [00:14:30] jaw that is gonna come from your real-life calendar.
[00:14:32] Okay? And, and if you want the full [00:14:35] rubric in writing plus the sources links so that you can verify every claim yourself instead of just taking my [00:14:40] word for it, that's gonna be in the AI Escape Plan newsletter. Every Tuesday and Thursday, I hand all my [00:14:45] subscribers one concrete AI side hustle with an actual first step, often of [00:14:50] multiple steps, not some vague, "Start today," language.
[00:14:53] That link will be down below in the show [00:14:55] notes, or, or you can just go over to darkhorseinsider.com, get on the list, and let the [00:15:00] newsletter help you with the homework while you do the fun work. Okay? Here's your whiskered [00:15:05] wisdom today. Here's the one thing that didn't make the scorecard because it's not a ranking [00:15:10] factor.
[00:15:10] It's a mindset shift. Every hustle on this list can produce a first dollar. [00:15:15] Again, I'm just gonna share that. What actually kills people isn't picking the wrong one off any [00:15:20] list, my list or anyone else's. It's picking one every two or three weeks because the first one [00:15:25] felt like it was going kind of slow in those first couple weeks.
[00:15:28] If you take nothing else from [00:15:30] this episode you're listening to right now, take this away. Pick one. From what, m- my list or anyone [00:15:35] else's list, I don't care who you pick it from, but pick one that you're gonna follow up on, and then set yourself a [00:15:40] 30-day proof of concept deadline. 60 days is better, but make 30 days your [00:15:45] absolute minimum.
[00:15:45] Set that deadline and do not let yourself shop for a new idea [00:15:50] or get caught in shiny object syndrome until that 30 or 60 day timeline [00:15:55] is up. Write that deadline down somewhere that you'll actually see it. Put a sticky note on your laptop, [00:16:00] an alarm on your phone. I don't care where you put it. Write it on your arm if you have to.
[00:16:04] The [00:16:05] hustle that wins isn't the fastest one on paper. It's the one you don't abandon in week [00:16:10] two. Do that today, not the research. Do the deadline. Okay? So here's where we landed. I [00:16:15] gave you seven AI side hustles ranked not by hype, but by how fast a real person with a [00:16:20] real job can get a real stranger to pay them real money.
[00:16:23] This round, [00:16:25] clipping came out top for speed. Freelance prompt work, whether you're using ChatGPT or Claude or [00:16:30] both, is a very close second. Meanwhile, the ever popular micro SaaS that [00:16:35] has the biggest ceiling also has the longest runway. So I would save it for round two [00:16:40] or even round three, but certainly not round one.
[00:16:42] Look, you don't need six months of research to [00:16:45] start. You need one hustle, one deadline, and one small action that you take [00:16:50] today. That is the whole plan. With that, I'm gonna leave you as I always do. Think [00:16:55] successfully and take action
